2023 brings new leadership at CFKL

Laurie Dillon-Schalk joined as the new Executive Director at the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes (CFKL) this past January.

The Rise of Community Foundations

The Community Foundation model has been quietly emerging across Canada as a simple yet highly impactful way for communities take care of themselves in perpetuity.

This philosophy of ‘Give Where You Live’ (or cottage) is a powerful motivator for many who want to make meaningful, long lasting community impact here in the Kawartha Lakes.

Our Community Foundation is now five years old and has arrived a true inflection point – poised for growth! Laurie shares "I am impressed by the incredible track record of community impact; CFKL has granted over $1 million dollars to Kawartha Lakes which, from my research, is a much higher contribution than other Foundations our size."

As a locally run, public foundation, CFKL are givers to the givers – granting to charities, large or small, to current or future projects, to all of Kawartha Lakes or to a specific town or village within CKL. Our goal to help the community invest in making meaningful, long lasting community impact.

Planting Trees at Schools

The Canopy Project KL is raising $30,000 to help create urban canopies at our SCHOOLS in Kawartha Lakes.

John Ireland, the driving force behind this multi-year school project noted an alarming lack of canopy cover at local schools.

With volunteer help and local business support, the cost of one tree is $30.

Consider buying a tree for your neighbourhood school.

For 2023, schools include:

St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School and I.E. Weldon Secondary School in Lindsay. Dr. George Hall Public School in Little Britain.

Fenelon Falls Secondary School and Langton Public School in Fenelon Falls and possibly two more schools from Coboconk & Bethany.

The Grove Theatre

The Grove has announced its 2023 season, running from June to September, featuring two mainstage performances as well as one-night evenings of comedy, music, and cabaret.

Subscriptions are now on sale with single ticket sales beginning May 1.

Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society

The Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society (FFHS) was spotted handing out 150+ rain barrels at Handley Lumber in Fenelon Falls.

According to Mike Perry, Councillor for Fenelon Falls, the rain barrels will help divert over 27,000 litres of water from Fenelon Storm sewers.

On April 24th, FFHS is holding a dessert & silent auction with a presentation on Trees: How Can We Help? Now that is sweet!

We support the work of the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society though a dedicated fund.

Bobcaygeon Covid-19 Relief Fund Wraps Up

On its 3rd anniversary, the Bobcaygeon & Area COVID-19 Relief Fund is now has closed. The Relief Fund raised support for 50+ families, 373 healthcare workers, 297 seniors and 21 community organizations.

This past March, funds were shared with the Bobcaygeon Food Bank, Dunsford Foodbank, Truth and Reconciliation Community in Bobcaygeon, Impact 32 and the A. Sheila Boyd Museum.

We are still collecting funds for Bobcaygeon - stay tuned for more news to follow.

Support for Seniors Needed

We are starting to receive requests for relief type grants to assist seniors with little to no resources with assisted living expenses. While we are still exploring these needs, we invite local neighbours to contribute to the Community Fund for Fenelon Falls to help us respond.

Our Federal Grant Administration

Community Service Recovery Grant
The Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes has been entrusted to allocate $265,000 from this Recovery Fund to support organizational systems and processes that will enable local community services to modernize their internal operations.

·      April 25, 2025 – Completion of CFKL’s evaluation of applications

·      June 2023 - Public announcement of fund recipients

·      By June 30, 2023 – Funding to flow to successful fund recipients.

Giving in perpetuity

While much of our granting goes to special local projects or supports the operating costs of charities, we also attract permanent endowment funds to enable future giving. Giving in perpetuity refers to a larger donation that is invested in a way that generates ongoing income for a charity or community.

For donors who give often or annually have an opportunity to think about planned giving. For example, those who normally give $500 a year to a charity, would need to donate $10,000 in a will to the CFKL and direct that donation to go on as part of their legacy.
